Anil Jain is a University Distinguished Professor in the Departments of Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Statistics & Probability at Michigan State University. He received his B.Tech. from IIT, Kanpur in 1969 and Ph.D. from Ohio State University in 1973. His research covers pattern recognition, machine learning and biometric recognition. His articles on biometrics have appeared in Scientific American (to appear August 2008), Nature (Q&A), IEEE Spectrum, Comm. ACM, Encarta and Scholarpedia.
He received the 1996 IEEE Trans. Neural Networks Outstanding Paper Award and the best paper awards from the Pattern Recognition Society (1987, 1991). He served as the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Trans. Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence (1991-1994). He is a fellow of the ACM, IEEE, AAAS, International Association of Pattern Recognition (IAPR) and SPIE. He has received Guggenheim, Humboldt Research and Fulbright awards. He also received the 2003 IEEE Computer Society Technical Achievement Award and the 2008 W. Wallace McDowell Award for contributions to pattern recognition, and biometric recognition systems.
